Editorial

Dear Members and Friends of the ABS,

hurray - travelling and visiting events is back! Though, please, don´t forget: abiding by the rule of social distancing is still the message of the month. Just look at this month´s calendar picture and, you´ll see what I mean. (By the way, could somebody spread this message amongst visitors to Britain´s beaches from Brighton to Bournemouth, please?)

I´m very happy to inform all those who haven´t been able to participate, that we from the Austro-British Society, too, have restored our acivities by starting with two magnificent events held in June - more of it further below. And we´re now trying to make up for the Corona pause by a mouthwatering and vast choice of events in July, August and September.  Consequently there is no summer break this year, which also accounts to our monthly board meetings. Let´s keep up our good spirits and entertain you with our social activities!

Past Events in June

Ausführliche Berichte und Bilder bereits vergangener Events sind wie immer auf unserer website www.oebrg.at nachzulesen. Um den erfolreichen Neustart unserer "Veranstaltungen 2020" zu unterstützen, sind hier die beiden ersten Events vom Juni besonders hervorgehoben:

1.  "CORONA - wie viel wert ist ein Mensch?" 

(17.06., Vortrag DDr. Matthias Beck, rechts, organisiert von Dr. Alexander Christiani, ABS Vice President, von dem auch nachstehender Kommentar stammt)

"Nach ungewohnt langer, erzwungener Veranstaltungskarenz starteten wir am 17.Juni im vollbesetzen Cafe Ministerium mit einer  außerordentlich erfolgreichen Diskussionsveranstaltung mit dem  Titel "CORONA-wie viel wert ist ein Mensch?" Niemand geringerer als der prominente Medizinethiker, Univ. Prof. DDr. Matthias BECK hielt das Impulsreferat, woran sich eine höchst engagierte Diskussion über viele Aspekte dieses sehr emotionalen und kontroversiellen Themas anschloss. Der Mensch und seine Würde sind unantastbar und müssen in der Bewältigung der Krise durch die Regierung und die Gesundheitsbehörden stets im Mittelpunkt stehen. Dies ist in Österreich glücklicherweise vor allem auch durch die Bewahrung der Spitals-Infrastruktur geschehen.

Ein kräftiges Lebenszeichen unserer ABS, dem sich in den kommenden Monaten noch viele weitere verschiedenartige Veranstaltungen anschließen werden."

2. "British & Luxury Car Excursion"

(20.-21.06.) Erstmals als optionale Zweitagestour ausgeschrieben, entschlossen sich Members and Friends alike das leider sehr britische Wetter zu geniessen und alle drei angebotenen Ziele mit ihren schönen Autos anzusteuern:

Als erstes die Messe "Garten Tulln" samt professioneller Führung, danach weiter nach Seewalchen am Attersee, zu Bio-Gärtner Karl Ploberger (ABS Mitglied), der just an diesem Tag seinen Geburtsstag feierte und durch seinen zauberhaften Privatgarten führte, und schliesslich nach Bad Aussee zum "Lotus-Museum" des dortigen Fanclubs dieser einstmals so erfolgreichen britischen Sportwagenmarke.

Mittwoch, 22.07. 18:00h, traditionelle "Prince George Birthday Party", Einladung mit weiteren Details in Vorbereitung, for members and friends.

Wednesday, 12.08. Lecture from Peter Llewellyn-Davies, in english, on the development of a Covid-19 drug. Invitation with further details in the making, for members and friends.

Dienstag, 25.08. Vortrag von Dr. Leo Hemetsberger, Philosoph, über "Grenzen des Wissens". Diplomatische Akademie, 1040 Wien. Einladung mit weiteren Details in Vorbereitung. For members only.

Mittwoch, 09.09. Jubiläum, bitte vormerken!  "10 Jahre Austro-British Society". Einladung mit weiteren Details in Vorbereitung. For members and friends.

11.-13.09. London-Reise zu "Last Night of the Proms". FULLY BOOKED.

Donnerstag, 17.09. Stephansdom, Feier anlässlich Restaurierungsabschluss der Riesenorgel. Aufgrund begrenzter Platzanzahl for corporate members only.

Mittwoch, 23.09. Vortrag Volker Seitz, Deutscher Botschafter i.R., "Afrika wird arm regiert - wie man Afrika wirklich helfen kann". Einladung mit weiteren Details in Vorbereitung. For members and friends.

Pia´s Recipe #3

Pia Wieser bäckt und kocht mit Begeisterung - für uns alle!

Wer noch? Britische und österreichische Rezepte, Tipps und Tricks sind sehr willkommen - bitte einsenden, danke!

Classic prawn cocktail

Ingredients (Serves 4)
o 400g cooked atlantic shell-on prawn
o Prawn
o 4 Little Gem lettuces, washed and trimmed
o 5 heaped tbsp mayonnaise
o 5 tbsp tomato chutney
o 2 tsp Worcestershire sauce
o 2 tsp creamed horseradish
o tiny splash Tabasco sauce
o squeeze lemon juice
o paprika for dusting
o 4 tsp snipped chive

Method
1. Peel all but 4 of the prawns (reserve these for the tops).
2. Break the lettuces into individual leaves, then divide the leaves evenly between 4 small glass bowls.
3. Sprinkle the prawns over the lettuce and season with black pepper.
4. Mix the mayonnaise, tomato chutney, Worcestershire sauce, horseradish and Tabasco together. Season to taste with lemon juice and salt and pepper, then spoon sparingly over the prawns.
5. Dust the top with a little paprika and sprinkle with chives.
6. Top with the remaining prawns and serve immediately. Delicious with brown bread.

Christian´s  soccer news

Last but not least, Christian Steiner, ABS Deputy Secretary General, offers the following update on the Premier League to all soccer fans:

The Premier league - What has changed for the sport, players, clubs and fans in times of Corona?

The game itself still lasts 2x45 minutes, but there is one additional one minute drinks break in the middle of both halves. Instead of the usual three substitutes per match, teams can now use up to five substitutions.

All players and staff are tested frequently up to two times a week and they are only allowed to stay at home/in a hotel or go to training until the end of the season. Matchdays are also quite special with an increased security standard in place. Even on-pitch behaviour by the players is regulated.

Having no fans in the stadium might just be the biggest change of them all for the viewers at home. However, TV broadcasters are quite creative in their bid to make it as enjoyable as possible for the fans on the couch.

In the meantime Manchester City's 2-1 loss at Chelsea last Thursday has all but confirmed Liverpool as Premier League Champions for the first time since 1990. The Reds of Merseyside are currently not only Champions of England, but also Champions of Europe (winning the Champions League last summer) and Champions of the World (winning the Club World Cup in January). What a feat!
