Editorial
Dear members and friends of the ABS,
our usual mingling with friends at the coffee house (or the tea room, if you prefer traditional british meeting places) is a thing of the past these days. But believe me - it´ll change again, hopefully sooner than later. Meanwhile let´s stick to the rule "keep social distancing, and stay in touch via our electronic means of communication". Hence we continue to inform you about all ABS activities via Newsletter, website including blog, facebook and our good old email correspondence, of course. More of this in our President´s message below.
With regard to our events of the immediate future, we are sorry to have to confirm their cancellation, or postponing respectively, until further notice, due to Corona precaution measures that we all have to follow strictly and with no exemption. But don´t you worry, we´re already thinking of an event for "the day after" to celebrate the return of normal life. In this context, may I draw your attention to three most valuable contributions from our board members Dr Melanie Sully, Joanna Godwin-Seidl and, Dr Ahmadolla Abdelrahimsai: Melanie´s reflections below should make us all thoughtful about it from a philosophical point of view, whilst Joanna´s offer re. her "Vienna Theatre Project" will keep us entertained, this bridging the weeks lying before us. And Ahmadjan guides us through the issue from a medical and humanistic perspective. Our sincere thanks and appreciation to the President as well as the three fellow board members, for their contributions to this newsletter.

Message of the President
 Liebe Mitglieder und Freunde der ABS!
Die aktuelle Corona Virus Pandemie hat uns alle mehr oder minder im Griff! Die Regierung hat zu recht und sehr schnell auf Notprogramm geschaltet - das gleiche tun natürlich auch wir. Das bedeutet, daß wir alle Events im März und April absagen mußten und was Mai betrifft, abwarten werden. Auch wir im Vorstand arbeiten aber weiter - allerdings vom Homebüro aus. Es gibt unverändert genug zu tun und wir bereiten vieles ab Mai vor. Zuletzt hatten wir seit unserem Bestehen die erste virtuelle Vorstandssitzung und sind somit voll handlungsfähig. Sobald Veranstaltungen möglich sind und wann immer das sein wird, ist alles vorbereitet, um sofort wieder mit unserem Eventprogramm voll durchstarten zu können. Lassen Sie sich überraschen und schauen Sie sich das an....
Derzeit wird häufig "social distancing" empfohlen. Wir wissen alle, was damit gemeint ist und sollen dies natürlich auch tun. Allerdings ist der Begriff nicht glücklich gewählt in meinen Augen. Ich würde eher von "physical distancing" sprechen wollen. Also bitte halten wir alle ausreichend physischen Abstand zu unseren Mitmenschen. Aber bitte halten wir sehr engen und häufigen sozialen Kontakt über alle möglichen sozialen Medien mit unseren Familienmitgliedern, Freunden, Nachbarn und eigentlich allen Mitmenschen. Das ist in dieser größten Krise seit dem 2.Weltkrieg meines Erachtens ganz besonders notwendig.
Zu guter letzt das Allerwichtigste: Bleiben Sie gesund und halten Sie alle durch - wir schaffen auch das!

Future Events: how to proceed
Also: Pause bis auf weiteres. Unsere kleinen grauen Zellen arbeiten aber längst an den future events, einschliesslich unser geplanter outdoor event "the day after". Beitrag #1 von Melanie Sully, einfühlsam und uns alle "am Boden haltend":
 Dear all,
The problem is we won´t know like a war when the day comes to say it´s over. There will be less deaths and new cases but it could tail out slowly - well into the summer. An open air event therefore would be good.
We need to rethink the current programme. Life after will change. Many will lose good friends and loved ones, be weakened emotionally, physically and to be blunt some of us may not come back.
We could do with talks on overcoming trauma, dealing with crises, the aftermath of economic collapse, cultural highlights of course.
In the meantime people could keep a kind of diary, what are they doing day 1 and so on of the crisis, the despair days, those of hope, what worked what not. Either we publish it, or come together after to see what kept us going, the UK films, the days in the UK whatver.
Life as we know has gone for now, it will for long not return. We need to adapt, and to survive.

 We are facing some rather unusual times, and the British term getting “stuck in” has never been so relevant. During this time, I have decided to set up my own initiative to connect and provide some, much needed, distraction. My project is set up to – in a true virtual sense – get performers and audience together in a series of online readings and other individual performances, connecting directly with the home-based audience.

vienna theatre project invites you to a nightly read of "1001 Arabian Nights" (which is surprisingly violent and a little bit raunchy). We bring you this and other beautiful stories, plays, poetry and music from our living-room(s). Sometimes there will be special guests reading, singing, dancing, acting. Everyone provides content created out of the need for social distancing (with some exceptions) – entertainment unplugged. The reading is always in English, anything else is not language specific, but we will always try to provide you with an explanatory introduction in English. Let's enjoy ourselves in our own virtual reality! Maybe YOU have something you would like to hear us read? Please let us know, and we will do our best to oblige!

· What will happen? The performer spends 5-10 minutes welcoming the audience, then there is the reading itself, and the evening is rounded off with a little information about future content and an “auf Wiedersehen”. If there is a special guest, a new monologue or other content to watch, you will be given information about where and how to watch it.
· Will I like it? Good question, I have never done this before so it is an interesting challenge for me also. It is me, and friends, in our living-rooms with a smart phone and in most cases no studio. We are at home providing community entertainment with what we have available to us.
· Does it cost me anything? Not at the moment. I would like to start a donation based funding initiative to help artists presently out of work.

 Liebe ABS Mitglieder und Freunde !
Es ist nach Gesetz und Vernunft zu handeln. Selbstverständlich muss der Schutz der älteren Mitmenschen Priorität haben ! Es ist mit hoher Wahrscheinlichkeit ein wirtschaftlicher Schaden erheblichen Ausmaßes bis zu einer weltweiten Rezession zu erwarten. Dann wird nach der Solidarität des Schutzes für ältere und Risikogruppen während der Pandemie ebenso Solidarität mit den wirtschaftlich Schwächsten Arbeitnehmern und Unternehmen, auch EPUs und Künstlerinnen und Künstlern gefordert sein. Eine Art solidarischer „Umverteilung“ ohne kommunistische Ideologie auf weltweiter Finanzebene, auf europäischer und einzelstaatlicher Ebene, aber nicht zuletzt auch ziviler Ebene der Starken für die Schwachen ist dann unumgänglich, um den sozialen Frieden nicht zu gefährden, aber vor allem um das wunderbare Gefühl des Helfen wollen und können zu spüren und die Menschen wieder näher zusammenrücken lassen !
Mit besten Wünschen für euch alle und eure Angehörigen und Freunde, bleibt gesund, helft wo ihr könnt und bewahrt Humor, denn Lachen ist immer noch die beste Medizin !
