Editorial
 Frankly: Ain´t I a lucky man? This time I have even TWO guest editors to contribute to this newsletter, thus saving me a lot of work that I, as the editor-in-chief, should have done otherwise myself. Therefore, a big round of applause goes to you both, Dr. Kurt Tiroch and Dr. Alexander Christiani, ABS President and Vice President respectively. Whereas the first one will proudly present his regular preview of the events planned for the second half of the year, the latter will give us his knowing view on the start of the Brexit negotiations in Brussels.
On this occasion, may I draw your attention to the following: As a consequence of his vast experience as long time Austrian ambassador and diplomat, Dr. Alexander Christiani is not only the Head of the ABS EXPERT COUNCIL. He also complements the long list of ambassadors both active and retired. All of them, with two exceptions, acting at the same time as Honorary Presidents of the ABS: S.E. Dr. Martin Eichtinger (London), H.E. Leigh Turner (Vienna), S.E. Dr. Emil Brix (Moscow), H.E. Simon Smith (Kiev), H.E. Susan le Jeune d´Allegheershecque (Paris), Dr. Eva Nowotny (retired, Vienna) and Colin Munro (retired, Vienna). The last two being active members of the ABS EXPERT COUNCIL. What a remarkable and most appreciated diplomatic network the Austro-British Society can rely on!
That´ll be all for the time being. There will be no ABS events or any other activities from 23 July until 28 August, as already announced in the June Newsletter. Before we all leave for the summer brake though, let me also say a big Thank You to Dr. Helmut Schuster, Group HR Director of our ever so generous corporate member BP. He acts also as a board member of the AFS ("Austauschprogramme für Interkulturelles Lernen"). Bit further down you´ll find what he has to tell us about this brave organisation, hoping to winning you over for joining in.

BMEIA: Bestellung des neuen Direktors der Diplomatischen Akademie
 Wien, am 21. Juni 2017 (OTS) - Bundesminister Sebastian Kurz hat den derzeitigen österreichischen Botschafter in Moskau, Dr. Emil Brix, zum künftigen Direktor der Diplomatischen Akademie in Wien ernannt. “Ich gratuliere Emil Brix zu seiner neuen Aufgabe und bin überzeugt, dass die Diplomatische Akademie von seinen vielfältigen diplomatischen Erfahrungen profitieren sowie weltweit führende Ausbildungsstätte für den diplomatischen Nachwuchs bleiben wird“, so Bundesminister Sebastian Kurz.

Liebe Mitglieder und Freunde der Österreichisch-Britischen Gesellschaft!
" Ein furchtbarer Sturm kam auf. Der Orkan tobte. Das Meer wurde aufgewühlt und meterhohe Wellen brachen sich ohrenbetäubend laut am Strand. Nachdem das Unwetter langsam nachließ, klarte der Himmel wieder auf. Am Strand lagen aber unzählige von Seesternen, die von der Strömung an den Strand geworfen worden waren. Ein kleiner Junge lief am Strand entlang, nahm behutsam Seestern für Seestern in die Hand und warf sie zurück ins Meer. Da kam ein Mann vorbei, ging zu dem Jungen und sagte, daß sein Tun völlig sinnlos sei. Er könne nie und nimmer alle Seesterne ins Meer zurück werfen. Seine Aktivität ändere nicht das Geringste. Der Junge sah den Mann einen Moment lang an, hob den nächsten Seestern auf und warf ihn ins Meer. Zu dem Mann gewandt, sagte er: Für ihn wird es etwas ändern!"
Diese Geschichte stammt von einem unbekannten Verfasser. Für mich ist sie ein Synonym für die Arbeit von zivilgesellschaftlichen Organisationen und damit auch für die ABS. Auch wir werden die Welt nicht großartig verändern können, aber vielleicht dem einen oder anderen Mitmenschen etwas Freude bereiten und seine Situation zum Besseren verändern können. Und das allein ist schon den Aufwand wert, den wir ehrenamtlich gerne einbringen.
Wir haben in den ersten 6 Monaten dieses Jahres bereits 19 Events organisiert. Alle sind mit Berichten und Fotos auf unserer homepage für den interessierten Leser einzusehen. Wir schauen aber nicht zurück, sondern unser Focus ist eindeutig auf die Zukunft gerichtet. Daher wollen wir nun das Veranstaltungsprogramm für das 2.Halbjahr mit heutigem Stand kurz präsentieren.

“Bringing BREXIT back to reality”.

"As London and Brussels prepare to negotiate the UK's exit from the EU, both sides need to tone down their confrontational rhetoric and adopt a more constructive approach".
The 2017 British general election is over, and contrary to expectations, it concluded with a hung parliament and a weakened Prime Minister.
Theresa May's intention behind the snap poll was to give herself enough room for maneuver in the talks which just started a few days ago. But it leaves open the questions of the UK's government intentions on how to handle the Brexit talks and the new parliament's position on this issue. What has also changed since the election is the political atmosphere between London and Brussels. A destabilized Britain is in need of the strategy, while an increasingly sceptical EU is in search of a negotiating partner.
Without a contingency plan to at least mitigate the direst consequences of a crash, both sides would suffer badly from a situation in which bilateral business relations would be in turmoil and the political consequences would undermine any effort to renew cooperation for years to come.
While the talks on the 19th of June have started with a conciliatory note from both sides, the question of sequencing in the negotiations are uppermost on both sides' mind at the moment. The EU 27 will not move away from their preference for discussing their priorities first. The British government hat little leverage to convince them to change their minds. But it could argue for a clear and public understanding on how the EU sees the talks unfolding after the launch of the first round. More pointedly, the ULK would be in its rights to ask the EU side for clarity on when and how long-term issues concerning future relations between Britain and the EU will be discussed.
Both sides will therefore need at some point to check their own interests. They will find that a transition period would make sense for both of them. It would allow enough time to define the details of any future partnerships between the UK and the EU on trade and security, for instance and provide for a progressive exit from the union's single market rules. On the issues of finances, a transition period up to the end of 2020, coinciding with the closure of the EU's current multiyear budget, would facilitate a deal by making British payments appear an orderly consequence of the budget process.
Hopefully, by cleaning their slates, Britain and the EU can shift the current mind-set from distrust and recrimination to a more rewarding partnership between a renovated union and a post Brexit UK. Raising their ambitions is probably the best if not the only way for Brussels and London to achieve success in the Brexit talks.
It is time for both sides to engage steadfastly on that path.
