She thankfully did not sing as she stood at the steps of Number 10 Downing Street in May 1979 but recited with a stern voice a somewhat truncated version of the Peace Prayer of St. Francis of Assisi to the surprised media present.

Three years later Margaret Thatcher was at war with Argentina. 1977 “The King” Elvis Presley died unexpectedly even though many will claim later to have seen him along with UFOs and little green men and that he is alive and well. 1975 the Beatles announced to a stunned world and sobbing teeny boppers that they have split up and it was for them the end of a long and winding road. (Get it?) “If you remember the 70s you haven’t been there” the old saying goes and some of us will remember these events but that alone proves nothing or does it?“The Sensational Seventies”, a collection of historical videos, entertainingly moderated by our very own Radio Legend Paul Hollingdale from Vienna International Radio, a tour de force through the 7th Decennium of the 20th Century, jolted the memory of those who “have been there” so they won’t forget again. Tony Christie, Don McLean, Barbara Streisand, Tavares, John Travolta, Olivia Newton John, Queen, AC/DC, Pink Floyd, Bee Gees, Abba, The Village People to mention just a few, had some of our members, eternally young at heart, dancing in the aisles.

“The Sensational Seventies”, a creation of Paul, followed a similar successful “Swinging Sixties” a couple of years ago. He is already planning another coup for the future: “The Exciting Eighties”. Ladies and Gentlemen, watch this space!

Last night’s location, “Kringer’s Pub” was new. But what a good choice it was. After his customary welcoming words our President, Dr Kurt Tiroch unleashed the efficient waiting staff with the announcement that all drinks were on the house. I couldn’t be sure but I don’t think anyone was left thirsty. I certainly was not left wanting. Can’t say fairer than that!
